Be part of something pawsitive!
At the Oswego County SPCA (OCAWL), everything we do happens because of people like you.
We’re a 100% volunteer-run, foster-based rescue — no paid staff, no big corporate backing — just a group of animal-loving humans determined to help pets in need find their “From Foster to Forever” homes.

you’ve ever wished you could make a difference for animals in your community, here’s your sign. You absolutely can.

Why Volunteer?
Because it matters.
Every hour you spend sorting donations, cuddling kittens, or helping at an event directly supports the care, safety, and happiness of local animals who need it most.
Along the way, you’ll:

-Build new skills (and probably get fur on your clothes)
-Meet kind, like-minded animal lovers
-See the real-life difference you’re making — whiskers and all
No experience? No problem. We’ll show you everything you need to know.
Who Can Volunteer?
Anyone with a heart for animals!
Students, retirees, families, and first-time volunteers are all welcome. Want to bring a friend or partner along? Just say so on your application — teamwork makes the dream (and the clean litter box) work.

Ways to Lend a Paw

Event & Fundraiser Squad
We participate in many events over the year including but not limited to From Foster to Forever Adoption Events, Bark in the Park, and local craft and vendor fairs. Our volunteers are essential to the success of our special events, which are crucial for our mission. Volunteers can assist with a variety of tasks, including event setup and takedown, managing activity booths, greeting guests, handling transactions, or helping with animal adoptions. If you enjoy working with people and being part of a team, this is a great opportunity to make a difference and help us raise funds for the animals we serve.
Cat Care Crew
Love cats? Same.

Our cat care volunteers are essential to the well-being of every cat in our care. You will assist with daily tasks, including cleaning kennels, refreshing food and water, and scooping litter. Most importantly, you will provide much-needed socialization, playtime, and cuddles. By spending quality time with the cats, you help them feel safe and loved, which greatly increases their chances of finding a forever home.
Thrift Store Heroes
Our thrift shop volunteers are a crucial part of our mission, as all proceeds directly fund the care of our animals. You will assist with a variety of tasks, including sorting and pricing incoming donations, arranging merchandise, and helping customers on the sales floor. If you enjoy working with people, organizing, and being part of a team, this is a perfect opportunity for you to use your skills for a great cause. Every item sold helps us provide food, shelter, and medical care for the animals we serve.
Transport Team
Our animal transport volunteers are vital to our operations, helping us provide essential care to the animals we serve. You will be responsible for the safe and timely transportation of animals to and from vet appointments, spay/neuter clinics (like Spay and Neuter Syracuse), adoption events, and even "Freedom Rides" to partner rescues in the region. This role requires a reliable vehicle, a commitment to animal safety, and careful handling of animals and their paperwork. If you are a dependable driver with a passion for helping animals get to where they need to be, this is a perfect opportunity for you to make a tangible difference in their lives.

Or... Something We Didn't Think Of Yet

Have an idea for something that isn't here that would help our animals out? Great! We are all about it! Let us know what you would like to do to volunteer and as long as it is feasible, let's do it! We don't have all of the answers here! It takes a village, and we are not silly enough to imagine that we have thought of every need you could help to fill! We are excited to hear all of your ideas!

Safety & Common Sense Stuff

Working with animals can get messy — literally. Our volunteer agreement just makes sure everyone stays safe and covered.

It includes:
- A reminder that volunteering involves some risk (and fur)
- Permission for emergency medical care if ever needed
- Media release so we can share photos of our amazing volunteers in action
- Parent/guardian signature if you’re under 18
